Smart glasses set-up with Meta AI

Setting up Meta smart glasses with VoiceOver on iOS is a smooth experience, as the Meta AI app is fully accessible with Apple’s screen reader.

Here is a step-by-step guide to get your glasses paired and ready to go.

1. Pre-Setup Preparation

  • Charge the Glasses: Ensure your glasses are resting inside the charging case and that the case has power.
  • Remove Packaging Film: Check for a tiny plastic film tab located near the hinges or under the nose bridge.
  • Check iPhone Settings:
    1. Make sure Bluetooth is turned ON in Control Center or Settings.
    2. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing and set it to Automatic or Bluetooth Headset. This ensures phone audio and VoiceOver route correctly once the glasses are connected.

2. Download and Open the App

  1. Open the App Store on your iPhone.
  2. Search for Meta AI and download it.
  3. Launch the app with VoiceOver.
  4. Swipe to navigate and tap to sign in with your Meta Account (or create a new one).

3. Put Glasses into Pairing Mode

  1. Keep the glasses inside the charging case with the lid open.
  2. Locate the physical pairing button on the back of the case. It is a slightly embossed, tactile button located near the bottom of the case, near the USB-C port.
  3. Press and hold this button for 5 to 8 seconds until the case’s front LED light flashes blue.

4. Complete App Onboarding with VoiceOver

  1. In the Meta AI app, VoiceOver will announce when your glasses are detected.
  2. Double-tap Connect or Pair.
  3. Bluetooth Prompt: When the iOS Bluetooth pairing request appears, swipe to Pair and double-tap. (If it asks to verify a passcode, you can safely skip/confirm).
  4. Wi-Fi Connection: Follow the VoiceOver prompts to connect the glasses to your Wi-Fi network for updates.
  5. Permissions: Grant permissions for Camera, Microphone, Location (set to “Always Allow”), and Notifications when prompted.
  6. Software Update: If the app prompts for a firmware update, leave the glasses inside the case while it updates.

5. Helpful Accessibility Customizations

Once paired, you can customize additional accessibility settings directly in the app:

  • Link Be My Eyes: Go to Settings > Accessibility > Be My Eyes inside the Meta AI app. This allows you to say, “Hey Meta, call a volunteer” hands-free using your glasses’ camera.
  • Enable Detailed Descriptions: In the app’s Accessibility settings, turn on More Detailed Descriptions so Meta AI provides richer details when describing scenes.
  • VoiceOver Audio Ducking: Go to your iPhone’s Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Audio, and turn Audio Ducking ON. This automatically lowers background music or Meta AI responses while VoiceOver is speaking.

Pro Tip: Once you take the glasses out of the case, they will power on automatically and play an audio chime announcing the battery level. You can control volume by swiping along the touch pad on the right arm of the glasses.
